Interesting facts about Bribie Island

Bribie Island is the smallest and only island to be connected to mainland Queensland by a bridge. The island is 34 square kilometers and has a population of around 17,000 people.

The island was originally known as "Boorabee" and was home to the Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal tribe. Europeans arrived on the island in the 1860s and used it for logging and farming.

During World War II, the island was used as a training ground for Australian soldiers and also had a significant military presence due to its proximity to Brisbane. The remains of gun emplacements and bunkers from this period can still be seen on the island today.

Bribie Island is home to the Bribie Island National Park, which covers more than half of the island and features a range of landscapes including rainforest, eucalypt forest, and heathlands. The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, and more than 200 species of birds.

The island is a popular tourist destination, particularly for fishing and water sports enthusiasts. It is also known for its stunning beaches, including Woorim Beach and Bongaree Beach, both of which are patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months.

Bribie Island is also home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Bribie Island Seaside Museum and the Bribie Island Light, which was built in 1987 and stands 22 meters tall.

Overall, Bribie Island is a unique and fascinating destination for tourists and locals alike, with a rich history and natural beauty that is truly remarkable.
