Public Profile

Distinguished and Famous people from Bribie Island

Bribie Island has supported markedly different artistic lives, from an internationally recognised painter working in a modest hut to a landscape artist whose contribution was celebrated in a public mural. Both have substantial connections through residence and work.

🎨 Ian Fairweather

Ian Fairweather spent the last two decades of his life living and working in a hut on Bribie Island. That modest setting was the workplace for some of his most celebrated paintings, including Gethsemane in 1958 and Epiphany in 1962, now in the Queensland Art Gallery's collection. His international experience and interest in different cultures informed a highly individual artistic practice. The hut has become part of his public image, but the important connection is the substantial body of work he produced there. Bribie was a working home during a major period of his career.

🎨 Dale Marsh

Painter Dale Marsh lived for many years on Bribie Island and included its light and coastal surroundings among his subjects. He studied with Vida Lahey in Brisbane before further training in Brisbane and Melbourne, and developed a career centred on painting in oils. His contribution to the island was recognised through a lifestyle mural associated with the 1988 Bicentenary celebrations, acknowledged by a plaque at Bellara. His later gallery biography records that he moved north of Brisbane. Bribie's connection is a sustained period of residence and artistic work, rather than his birthplace.

📖 Hector Holthouse

Hector Holthouse lived on Bribie Island with his wife Sybil in a house he largely built himself. A former sugar chemist and newspaper reporter, he became a prolific writer of Queensland history for general readers. River of Gold, about the Palmer River gold rush, established his reputation, while other books explored pastoral life, coastal places and regional history. His lively style attracted a broad audience, although historians criticised aspects of his research and interpretation. Bribie Island’s connection is a documented home, where a working writer’s life joined a practical interest in building the place he lived.
